ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ Eumolpos standing front, head to left, sacrificing out of patera over lighted altar with his right hand and holding torch with his left. RPC V.1 (forthcoming) -. Varbanov -. Eumolpos, a prominent figure in Greaek mythology, was a Thracian king and the legendary founder of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the ancient religious rites of Demeter and Persephone. He was hailed as one of the founders of Philippopolis and had a sanctuary devoted to him on one of the city's three hills, which was named Eumolpia in his honor.
